Introduction to Slip Casting (Weekday Course)

In this beginner Slip Casting workshop, you’ll discover and understand an unique ceramic production method which involves pouring of liquid clay, known as slip into a mold. You can use this method, which provides efficiency in mass production, for creating functional wares as well as for sculptural forms.

You can be part of this workshop - 

  1. If you have any background in ceramics. Extensive experience with clay is not required.
  2. If you have a basic knowledge about ceramic material and its properties
  3. No prior slip casting experience is needed

In this extensive hands-on workshop, you will learn the basic slip casting process from start to finish. Our guidance will cover every step: preparing molds (1 and 2 part mold), mixing and pouring slip, and demolding and finishing your cast pieces. You'll learn how to select the right molds, achieve consistent thickness, and troubleshoot common issues.

Through this workshop you will understand:-

  • Basic knowledge about slip casting and mold making process
  • Pros and cons of slip casting process
  • How to mix plaster and make 1 and 2 part mold
  • Plaster to water ratio
  • Basics of making and Identifying a master
  • Definition and composition of slip
  • Specific gravity, viscosity and shrinkage to fine tune the slip
  • Measurement and adjustment of a slip to a required density
  • How to adjust a casting slip to the require fluid properties
  • Problems and solutions in casting and mold making process
  • Glazing of the slip casted articles

 

This workshop involves less theory and more practical work. Some of these are to be completed during the session and few to be practiced at home. You will need a very small space at home to execute the guidance will be given on how and what is needed to set up this space.

Each participant will get a kit, with following materials. At the end of this workshop you will be comfortable making 1 and 2 piece mold independently.

  1. Plaster of Paris - 2kgs
  2. Slip clay powder - 2kgs
  3. Deffoculant
  4. Releasing agent
  5. Vinyl sheet
  6. Viscosity measuring cup
  7. Ink filler
  8. Tape

The kit will not include a weighing machine. You will need a good precision weighing machine (capacity 5kgs with 1 gram precision). If you don’t have one, you can purchase it from Amazon.

Session details:-

This 12 session workshop is spread over 7 days. In addition you will have to spend some time at home practicing. Session dates are as follows.

  • 27th August  : 10:30am to 1:30 pm
  • 28th, 29th, 30th August : 10:30 am to 5:30 pm
  • 30th August : 2:30 - 5:30 Practice sessions
  • 9th & 10th September  : 10:30 am  to 5:30 pm
  • 21st September - Glazing Session (Students who don't know glazing can take back the bisque pieces or ask their batch mates to glaze it for them)

Take away from the course:-

  1. Small collection of slip casted articles which are glazed (5 articles)
  2. Couple of 1 and 2 piece molds
  3. Basic materials in the kit to continue slip casting at home

Kavitha Arvind

Kavitha is a passionate creator who believes in craftsmanship of products. An interior designer by profession, she quit her corporate job to pursue her childhood passion in arts & crafts.

She has hands-on experience with multiple crafts including jewelry making, furniture designing and paper crafts. It was her love for terracotta jewelry that brought her to Claystation in 2013. She says that the unconstrained nature of clay and the freedom of expression is what has attracted her to this medium.

Kavitha enjoys clay in both wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques and loves to combine them in her work

Ganesan Manickavasagam

Ganesan has been instrumental in conceptualizing and building Clay station, the organization that is playing an eminent part of the journey of studio pottery in India. He has been leading the research and development activities related to ceramic Glazes and Clay at
Claystation. Over the last several years Claystation has developed number clay bodies and glazes that are bought after by artists in India and abroad. He has been involved in training artists on using UMF approach to glaze formulation using locally available raw materials.

 

 

 

 

NOTE:

1Refund

  • On or before 7 days (20th August)  - Full refund
  • On or before 2 days (25th August)  - 50 % refund
  • Cancellation after (25th August) - No refund
  • All the refunds will be processed only after 15 working days post cancellation

2Transfer

  • Transfer to another person - If a person is not able to attend the program for any personal reasons, they can transfer their slot to another person for the program they have registered for, and inform the studio at least 1 day before to add them in the group.
  • Transfer to another class - Transfer to an alternative class date is not possible once you register. You will need to cancel the registration for the existing program (Cancellation and refund policy will apply) and re-register for the new program

3.Missed Sessions -

  • Claystation will schedule 1 make up session during the course.
    Kindly  Connect with Studio team   for the date .
  • Claystation will not offer refunds for the sessions missed
  • Claystation reserves the right to cancel or change the schedule of classes. The participant will receive a full refund in the event of cancellation. However, if the classes are rescheduled, you can opt for shifting to the next batch/postponed date or take a refund.

4.Studio Closure:

  • If the studio is forced to close due to factors outside of our control such as severe weather conditions, or an infectious disease such as Covid-19, we will make an effort to reschedule the paused sessions. However we will not offer any refunds
